Jamie Mcguire - From Here to You
Sigh. I don't even know where to begin. The only other Jamie Mcguire book I have read is Beautiful Disaster. I really liked Travis and as some may recall, I hated Abby aka the bitchiest bitch that ever bitched. I got this one free so thought I would give her another shot (JM not BBB). This is a stand alone but has some sort of cameo appearances by various Maddox brothers. Including one that seriously felt like the brother (Taylor, maybe??) and his h were trying to muscle in on this book or theirs has been written to take place right along side. There wasn't much of them but what there was is distracting in that it sounds better than the actual book I am trying to read. Anyway, onwards. SPOILERS FOR WHOLE BOOK .............
This heroine is an idiot. There I said it. This book honestly felt like it was someone's first draft ever writing anything. Nothing was filled out, the h's motivations were murky at best and the H had very little, it any, personality beyond butt kissing the always offended heroine. She literally breaks up with him and plans to leave because he didn't tell her he was a marine (he was also an FBI agent at some point and she gets pissed about not knowing that in an earlier argument). This was the lamest, most useless, pathetic, childish excuse I have ever heard. She is fine not knowing anything about his job cause it is classified (we will get to that). She does not even know what he does or where he works or anything whatsoever and that is ok but him not telling her he was a marine is break up worthy? You have only known each other for less than 8 months at that point! I bet there is a shit load of things he hasn't told you yet, you brainless twit!!! Anywaaaayyyy. I have to stop now or I never will. On to his job.
He works for the government at some super secret gov't facility (that everyone knows about - sort of like Area 51) where they do super secret things with scientists and doctors and it is soooo secret, guys, he doesn't even know what they do! Ooooooo!!!! However, it also seems like he doesn't know what he does either. His squad (the one from the marines) and he, and I am going by the descriptions in the book, are basically security guards for the main level of the super secret facility that everyone knows about. They chase off trespassers, ne'er do well teens and the like. But only the main floor! The other floors have their own super secret security guards, to keep them out I guess. At one point he says they are getting paid six figures. WHAT!!!!!! I am in the wrong business. They also seem to get pretty fancy meals, hello pick your own pasta lunch! I am there!!!
Oh there is kind of a story in this book as well. So anyway, the h has run off on her abusive fiance on the wedding day. And she is pregnant. H and h get involved near immediately (and she is lying about her name and to the boss about her pregnancy which makes her indignancy at him not filling her in on the marine thing even worse, so eff you, you whiny nag) and of course ex finds her and wants her back. He does stalkery stuff like killing animals so everyone is concerned. At this point, h is 8 months preg and working at a hotel. H drops her at work which is deserted, no guests, other employees, nothing where they have confrontation with ex who is violent and leaves. They fight about marines and she dumps him. His sister calls cause she has been in a car wreck caused by bad ex (how the bad ex knew this was H's sister is up in the air). Super smart, now tearful H leaves h alone at deserted hotel to go get his sister. Does not call anyone or consider the fact that the ex just has to turn the car around and go back and then H doesn't go back because she might try to break up with him again, sniff. Ex shows up of course and takes h, H eventually figures that out, chases, labor, gunfight with team of seriously incompetent ex marines and suddenly it is clear why they are now security guards, dead ex.
One thing I found to be extremely odd and off putting is that the H's parents are bible thumping religious nuts and the H is atheist. The h is also religious and they have discussions where she just can't believe he doesn't believe in God and he systematically and logically tears down every argument she has and makes her look like she's part of a fruit and nut loaf. And not the good part. Why is this even in there? What is the point in making the h look even more foolish than she already does? I am really beginning to wonder if JM just hates her own heroines.
Oh yeah, I give this one out of five stars. Obviously.
