Book reviews are ultimately someone's personal opinion. So the fact that I didn't care for this book, doesn't mean that many of you won't absolutely love it. I'll give my reason's and you can decide for yourself.
This book starts just before the american civil war, with a prologue. The h is enjoying her 17th birthday party. She's begged the H (a half breed Comanche that works on her father's ranch) to give her a kiss. He does (and how) but they get caught and her father runs him off. The first chapter starts five years later. The war is over. Her father, and two of her brother's are dead. Her other brother is crippled. Now her widowed sister has been captured by the Comanche. She begs the H to help her recover her sister. He agrees, on the condition that she marry him first.
He doesn't want to take her with him into Indian territory, but circumstances force them to stay together. They end up in the H's half-brother's camp, while they search for the sister. They find her and rescue her, but that's only half the story.
I really enjoyed the plot. If it were written differently, I would have enjoyed the whole thing much more. This book was written in 1994 and has that more angsty feel. So I'll be upfront in saying I'm not a fan of angst. But it was mainly other things I didn't enjoy.
1) constantly misunderstanding what each other says. Then spending pages on inner dialogue going over it again and again. Just TALK! 2) The H accuses the h of being spoiled and manipulative. He's right, she is, at least for the first half. 3) the book's plot revolves mainly around the prejudice and bigotry of the time. It's probably historically accurate, but for me, not an enjoyable aspect.
I'm glad this wasn't the first Nicole Jordan I read. I really love all her series, but her early stand-alone novels are hit an miss for me. This one was more miss than hit.
