Whipping Girl fits the j/-p theme.
I did like it but it isn't for everyone. It's a darker type story with an OTT, controlling, non-pc, dominant j/p alpha H. The H and h are kidnapped as young children. He was kidnapped to be trained to be an assassin and she was kidnapped to be his "gift" or reward for killing. She is also to be used as his punishment (by severe whipping) should he ever mess up. The two bond as children. He believes she's his, period. His life is all about her and she's everything to him.
The first half of the book is their childhood and the second half is when they are adults. I LOVED the first half. It was very interesting. The second half I didn't like as much due to the H's personality. He was just too much. He was extremely controlling. He didn't allow the h to swear nor use a disrespectful tone of voice with him and when she did, he punished her. So you can imagine how possessed he was when the h slapped him when he was being a dick. I hated it. His punishments were sexual and she didn't have a safe word. He did things like take her "back door" even though she begged him not to, was afraid and it hurt her. That's rape imo regardless of the fact that she had an O. He also took her mouth as a punishment so hard she had a sore throat. Oh and then she apologized to him! Urgh!
I didn't believe in their love because my personal defination of love is that it's unselfish and that the other person's feelings matter more. I did believe she was everything to him and he to her but it was in an obsessive, unhealthy way. I'm sorry but if a H treats a h badly, I need her to deserve it and him to deeply regret it. Toning down the H's behavior would've made a huge difference imo. Huge!
Overall, I did enjoy the book. Many with love it, I think. The author has a nice writing style and she drew me into her world right away. I devoured the first half of the book (5 stars for me). The second half would be more like 3 stars and I loved the epilogue. That was great.
