And some great movies made from these books!  Gal I used to work with:  Raintree County was her absolute favorite film!   I read quite a bit of Gene Stratton-Porter growing up & loved it!  One of my favorites:  Her Father's Daughter  I can barely stand to read anymore.  It is extremely bigoted.  I used to tell myself that it was typical of the era & glossed it over, but now even the wonderful descriptions of the lands, etc doesn't offset it enough.  Such a shame.  Otherwise, it's a great story of a young gal coming of age & standing up for herself.  

bonnieg, Okay, I've not read Raintree County! I did Ben-Hur, how I don't know! & Friendly Persuasion. I've only watched the movies for Magnificent Ambersons & An American Tragedy. And I know I'm in the minority in this, but I HATE "A Christmas Story!" I don't get why others enjoy it so, but so it goes. I'll watch "Christmas in Connecticut (Stanwyck version) instead, happily!!!

GS-P is pretty much regional; Father's Daughter being set in southern California was a bit unusual, but maybe not as I just found out that she was pretty unusual in that she owned/ran a film studio in SO CAL, one of the first of women to do so!

I do recommend Freckles and A Girl of the Limberlost They are typical writing for the early 1900's, but the detailing of the Limberlost Swamp area, etc, plus the growth of the main characters in each book is great. I don't feel the bigotry that I do in Father's Daughter. I'll put the quoted descriptions below.

Yeah, I still highly recommend them both; reread them periodically. However, while I did know they did a movie based on Freckles (and it's pitiful!), I didn't know they'd done any on Girl! Said one as recent as 1990. May have to look that up!
