Another book I enjoyed. My problem at first was that I didn't understand the military lingo. Luckily a co-worker, male nurse and ex-military, was able to translate for me. Once I "got" the military terms down I was ok. Enjoyed the movie, too.

The military lingo was difficult for me, too! ( my dad is retired Air Force officer. So I certainly could ask any military question) I just didn't enjoy the story. They're many authors my dad enjoys that just don't 'click' with me.( John le Carre, James Michener) than again my dad isn't fond of Judy Blume, Sarah Dessen, Cathy Hopkins,Holly Smale, Louise Rennison,Jacqueline Wilson)Dad and I have sorta of running joke about my love of teen chick lit.

I had to laugh when I read your father is a fan of James Michener. So was my father. Michener and Leon Uris. I remember being about your age and trying to read Michener's Hawaii (enjoyed the movie with Julie Andrews), The Source and many other and then Uris's The Haj and others and being bored to death. Now as an adult I do enjoy them. Michener was a very descriptive writer, pages and pages or description. At that age I wanted more than description. Great writers, but not for me as a teenager.
I'm not a fan of Tom Clancy, either. He is one rare author whom I think his books make better movies.
I do love James Michener. I started reading his books as a teen. I even have one book that is simply a collection of his most memorable descriptive passages from his books.

Perhaps I'm making the mistake of judging an author solely on the only book that I have read. I remember not enjoying Texas by James Michener. And since they were many other books I was eager and excited to start reading, I set Texas aside and never returned to it. The question arises if you didn't care for the first book you read by a particular author, are you willing to give that author a second chance and when do you give up on that author completely?

foureyedgirl I am at the opposite end of the age spectrum, I very rarely give an author a second chance. IMHO there are too many good authors/books waiting to be discovered; why waste your precious time on something/someone that is not resonating? And to be clear just because a book receives a 5 star rating or is on the best seller list does not necessarily mean it is the right book for your enjoyment. Very few of my favorite books will ever appear on the best sellers lists and even fewer will receive 5 stars by other readers.
Be careful what you wish for, it might just come true.

I remember trying to read other Michener books, at age 13, but just couldn't get into them. I did read Gone With the Wind about that time and loved it. The only reason I tried the other Michener/Uris books was because my father kept pushing me to try....
One of my dad's favourite authors is Tom Clancy. I started reading 'The Hunt for Red October' but gave up- Tom Clancy book aren't for me.😀
Speaking of Tom Clancy and The Hunt for Red October, my husband just found it on the BBC America channel. So we're apparently watching it again for the 3,000th time.

My husband and my older brother with The Matrix series... I'm more of a Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventures person.
As for a book that I could not finish and the reason was it was just so much to take in, The Color Purple by Alice Walker. I never had to read it for school I know there's s a movie (which also have never finished watching) and thought here's my chance, I put it down and away and never picked it back up.
Put this book aside, but went back to it. Too wordy. Too many other characters ignored the clues on who he, the Count, really was. Unobservant. Parts good, parts frustrating.
