It takes the first 5 books before you really see the relationship between them blossom into what it is in the later books. Book 5 is super intense and you see the relationship start. Books 5 & 6 are the ones that show Adam's alpha-ness, in my opinion.
I just finished book 5 and you are totally right! I don't usually have patience to wait around for several books before getting to what I want to read about and I would have stopped at or before book 3. The Adam in book 5 does not resemble the Adam in earlier books at all. I tend to reread a lot and I would start with book 5 if I do reread this series.
The first 4 books set the world and show Mercy growing into herself. I enjoy them for that part.

You are right, I am just too impatient to take that much time! I want everything yesterday. I find it difficult to accept the Adam in books 5 and on is the same guy who lived next door to her for so long and either did not have any attraction (when he was married) or just didn't act on it in any noticeable way and now he is nuts about her. They just don't feel like the same guy. I just finished the one with his ex wife coming to stay and really had to shake my head over him doing that. If Mercy had an ex husband who needed help there is no way he would have let him move in and try to take over his place like the ex wife did to her and everyone was okay with it for the most part. That was a big what are you thinking!! moment. Why couldn't she stay with Sam again? I really wanted to read the moment when Adam shot the ex down spectacularly, not just be told it happened later. I like smack down scenes and missed it there. He also needed a smack upside the head for even thinking for a moment that it was okay to have her there let alone using their bathroom and sleeping in the room next door but I am lacking in the compassion area myself.
Thank you for your posts on this thread. I've been inspired to start Mercy's series again. I am loving it actually and while book 3 is awful, I think it might be my favourite. Seeing Ben share his painful past in order to help Mercy and Adam. I love how Adam treats her in this book, strong but controlled. He put Mercy's needs first and now in Book 4 he did it again at the start of the book. Bit of a shock but hey, he's Alpha and Mercy is his. Sigh!
There are some great stories in Patricia Briggs' Shifting Shadows: Stories from the World of Mercy Thompson. The Ben story had some laugh out loud moments.
