Someone is shot outside Blaire Mallory's gym. Cop Wyatt shows up and starts investigating. Only problem is, two years ago she and Wyatt dated and he ghosted her after a few dates.
This is an older Linda Howard, and like other books she wrote during the oughts there is the whole "battle of the sexes" thing going. Wyatt wants to get Blaire into bed, she is resisting. It's so sexist in places, not in the women aren't as good as men way, but in the men are from Mars women are from Venus kind of way. Blaire is so OTT that the book is exhausting to read. Still, it was great. I enjoyed it so much I read the second book in the series immediately.
Blaire is an unapologetic girly girl. She used to be a cheerleader, she now owns a gym. She is pretty disciplined about her weight and her health. Her best friend is her sister, with her mom being a close second. As Wyatt says, she is high maintenance.
Wyatt is a typical Linda Howard hero. He's a cop, he's not good with expressing his feelings. He is protective. He thinks teal is a kind of duck. Pretty two dimensional if you ask me, but who cares?
The banter between the two is hysterical. Mostly Blaire. Blaire is hysterical. As I said, Blaire gets exhausting, I can see how Wyatt thinks she's high maintenance. Imagine Jaine (from Mr Perfect) on speed.
Here's a quote:
"What I am now is a reasonable, logical, adult woman who runs her own business and believes in a fifty-fifty relationship. It just so happens there’ll be times when I’ll have both fifties..."
About halfway through the book, I realized that this must be the book that inspired KA. I love Linda Howard's older books. This one is not quite in the same vein as her others, but a great read nonetheless.

I love this book. Actually, I love this set of books. They are two of my go to books when I'm in the mood for a fun read. Love Blaire, and Wyatt is a perfect foil for her. I have read these over and over, finally listened to the audio when my library got them in. The audio books were well done, although it took me a bit to adjust to the narrator's voice in the above book, which is the first in the two book series. Probably because I listened to the second one first. (the hold on it became available first)
Why is it, the more books I read the taller my tbr stack gets?
