Banana Boat I have the same problem but the good thing about having so many sports lovers explain the rules is that some things stick even though I tend to confuse terminology but here goes to the best of my understanding(before I blocked my dad's explanations, and everyone who has tried ever since).
11 players to the field for each team. 1 goalie, then there's 4 players helping defend the net, 4 trying to score goals, (the formation can vary sometimes there's 5 protecting the net) but even so all players except the goalie can move freely all over the field, anyone can score, 2 players who are the closest to the opposing team are usually the ones set of keeping the ball in the other teams area. No matter how far or close who ever scores gains 1 point for his team. If you send a goal straight into your net (team's goal post) then the other team wins the goal and gets the point. (This varies depending on the league as well, there's a whole lot of leagues, so I kept to the really basic).
Side note: My dad always said that the most effed up thing he ever saw was a game where a foot player scored on his own team, my dad swears the man knew what was going to happen to him, and was later killed by fanatics (shot to death). Brutal stuff.
Soccer is also one of those sports that is played everywhere, I mean everywhere Africa, Asia, Europe, South America, North America, Australia (and maybe even Antarctica when the scientists grow bored, lol). Which maybe the real reason why I watch the world cup, (other than to see really good players, that's a bonus) is because of the unity that comes from the love of the sport. Then there's the teams that want to score so badly and protect their turf (hence why they overact whenever they get hit or stumble) they play their hardest and best when the world cup is up for grabs. I think the only team in recent years to do badly in their own land was Brazil in the last world cup, my mom's home team right there and she was crying at how bad they did, when they had their captain injured (Neymar) and as if they (the team) had never even played the game before or as if the only player who was allowed to score was their injured captain they got beaten badly(sorry Brazil, but that was a let down).
And this is why I prefer my soccer players in a book, lol! Less confusing to watch than to explain
