Does anyone have any suggestions for making oatmeal palatable? I can’t stand the mushy nature of it, but I REALLLLLY want to be able to eat it. I’ve tried overnight oats which I thought was even worse than cooking it on the stove (no offense to those who like it that way)
I should mention that as far as adding stuff in to make it taste better, I’m trying to leave OUT butter and sugar. Fruits, nuts, that’s fine. My problem is the texture. I’ve heard about toasting the oats before adding the liquid so that’s what I’m going to try in the morning.
thanks!
eta: sorry I just realized this may belong somewhere else, like the Coffee Shop section. Feel free to move if so!

Bruin Girl, Your post made me laugh! I happen to like oatmeal though I haven't had in over a year. My mom use to put sugar and a dab of butter on ours, this was a million years ago. I just use Splenda now. Try eating it in a cookie with some cinnamon (hah). Really, beside the nuts or fruit I have no clue. 🎃
I know some people like putting cold or warm water on the oats and eating it, they didnt like the mushy texture either. My kids like eating it this way.
Bruin Girl In the Coffee Shop board under What's Cooking, SamanthaK posted a recipe for cookies that are made with mashed bananas, oatmeal, and nuts, then baked for 12 mins. No sugars or anything else added. Could you eat something like that?
Its probably not very healthy, but I add brown sugar, cinnamon and raisins to my oatmeal. I think all the doctoring up that I do to it to make the oatmeal palatable most likely defeats the whole purpose of eating oatmeal in the first place.

I’m willing to try anything at this point! I’ll head over there to check it out. Thanks!
Are you trying to get more oatmeal into your life, or are you wanting a hot cereal? If it's the latter, maybe you can try what is often called "noatmeal." I make mine out of chia seeds, unsweetened shredded coconut flakes, pumpkin seeds, pecans, cinnamon, and whatever floats your boat. I add a bit of water and heavy whipping cream (you could use whatever milk replacement you like) and microwave it. I also add butter and vanilla stevia. The chia seeds get kinda slimy, so you might not like that. The coconut has a firmer texture though, so that might offset it enough to make it okay for you.
Keep in mind that if you are on a blood thinner medication, chia seeds are not recommemded. They were one of the foods my dad's cardiologist warned him to avoid. I'm not sure if that means totally off limits, or if occasionally eating them is okay. Check with your doctor first if need be.

My goal is to eat more oatmeal. I found a method that has made it possible for me eat it without gagging...I got Coaches Oats at costco and toast them for a couple minutes till they smell a bit nutty. Remove from pan and boil my almond milk with a pinch of salt and cinnamon, toss the oats back in, cover, turn off the heat and let sit for 7 min. After 7 min I stir and cover for another few min and it’s a thick lumpy texture (so appetizing, I know) but not creamy-mushy like regular oatmeal. THEN, I top with granola and a little maple syrup. Basically, the crunchiness of the granola makes it possible for me to choke down, but i try not to go overboard with it.
All your add-ins sound good so I will have to branch out and give them a try.
This method is probably nothing new to regular oatmeal eaters, but it definitely turned out different for me...maybe it’s the coaches oats, or the pre-toasting, I’m not sure.

Thanks agreads! I didn’t know this, and thankfully I’m not on blood thinner since I put chia in my smoothies everyday...

I should have been more specific in my above post. Since noatmeal is an oatmeal replacement, I don't cook it long enough to change the texture much. I just cook it a couple of minutes to get it hot. So if you're adding it to oatmeal, you might want to add it at the end so it doesn't end up mushy. Good luck on your oatmeal quest.
Edited to add: I obviously don't know how to post. This post and the one above it were supposed to be a single post (a quote with my reply).
