i used to be completely addicted to Urban Fantasy. Believe it or not, Twilight was my gateway drug...... yes I know many loathe and mock the series but I absolutely loved it. It wasn't the writing obviously because no one could argue that technically it could use some work. For me, it was the romance. It reminded me of what I naively hopped for (sans fangs and blood drinking..lol) as a teen. I hadn't had a steady reading habit in years. I was always working or watching television. If I did read, it wasn't Urban Fantasy. I had never been a lover of vampires and werewolves in any type of medium. My best friend told me many times that she loved it and I absolutely had to read it. I wasn't interested. As one of our girls nights, I was dragged to the first movie. As terrible as the acting and production quality was, the story piqued my interest. That night I read Twilight and soon finished all 5 books. I had one hell of a book hangover afterwards. For years I couldn't get enough UF until I either became too picky and cynical or the well of well written Urban Fantasy dried up. Most likely both. Anyway, after years of reading mostly contemporary romance, I have rediscovered my love of UF. I am hoping there are others on this message board who also love UF so we can share recommendations.
Currently, I'm reading The Wilds series by Donna Augustine and am loving it! I'm normally not a fan of post apocalyptic/dystopian books because the settings are so bleak which depresses me. I decided to try it anyway because I really like this author and I'm trying to read more books outside of my comfort zone. I'm so glad I did. So I'm on book two and this is what we know so far. 150 years ago a plague named the Bloody Death hit the earth. It killed off 95% of the worlds population and had a 100% mortality rate. If that wasn't bad enough the plague pops up every 10 to 20 years however an excessively small percentage of those infected survive the virus. They are known as Plaguers. Plaguers are reviled and often killed or contained. Plaguers are rumored to be able to see things about people ( usually a persons most horrific memory) and see Dark Walkers. Most people assume that Plaguers are insane. When the book opens we meet Dahlia, our h. She is a Plaguer that has been incarcerated in a sanitarium for the criminally insane since she was four after killing a teacher. She has lived within this institution for fourteen years and is regularly tortured, underfed, not allowed to exercise and not provided enough time to sleep. She can see Dark Walkers but learned early on not to disclose this as the Dark Walkers are always watching and questioning her. She ends up escaping and going to live in the Wilds. In the Wilds there is no government and it is about the strongest surviving. As we go through book one and book two we learn there is much more to Dahlia than just the ability to see. There is also a lot more out there than most are aware of. There is a possible romance aspect.... it is very slow burn which I am loving. Almost at the end of book 2 and no confirmation of romantic interest though all signs point to yes! Anyway, this series is really good so far. I love the world building. I am also enjoying the character development. The h can be annoying at times with her decisions but considering her background it is to be expected. Soon I'll be starting book 3.
