I love both urban and traditional fantasy. It's probably sacrilege to say this here, but, with a few exceptions, I'm not much of a paranormal romance fan. I do want some romance in my fantasy books. The romantic relationship can be integral to the plot, but I don't want it to be the main focus. The main exception (and I'm not sure that this series quite qualifies as paranormal romance) would be Karen Marie Moning's Fever series. The reason this paranormal romance is a favorite of mine can be summed up in two words: Jericho Barrons. He tops my list of dark, dangerous, totally swoon worthy gamma Hs.
Here's my list of favorite urban fantasy series:
Dresden Files series by Jim Butcher
October Daye series by Seanan McGuire
Mercy Thompson series by Patricia Briggs
Kate Daniels series by Ilona Andrews (Okay, actually any and all series by Ilona Andrews)
The Hollows Series by Kim Harrison
The Others Series by Anne Bishop
Generation V series by M. L. Brennan
Treading a kind of strange line between traditional and urban fantasy:
The Chronicles of Elantra Series by Michelle Sagara
I'm sure I've forgotten some favorites, so I might add to this list later. It's always a good idea to reserve the right to change my mind and, therefore my list, at any given moment.
After I've given it some thought, I'll probably come up with a list of my favorite traditional fantasy novels and series to post here as well. Just in case there are some fans of traditional fantasy who are looking for recs.
And I would absolutely love it if someone can recommend some more books that I haven't discovered. I'm always on the hunt for some good fantasy.
Nice list! I've read all of them but Generation V and The Chronicles of Elantra. I will have to check both of them out.
I haven't read a lot of straight up fantasy books but I read the Black Jewel series by Anne Bishop and loved it. I would love to know what fantasy books were your favorite.
