A Courtesan’s Scandal – Scandalous Book 3 – Julia London
Rating 2.5 / 5.0
Heat 7 / 10
Genre Regency
My rating of this book is based mostly on how I felt about the book. If you don’t have the same preferences as I do, you might like it a lot more than I did. It is well written, for the most part.
My first complaint is the hypocrisy of the H. He’s hippity hopping around on his moral high horse. At first he is quite rude and demeaning to the h. Later he spends a lot of time going on about how his pristine reputation is necessary to the well being of his entire family. All the while, he’s carrying on an affair with a married woman. One who has not yet provided her husband with a child and whose husband would likely beat her to a pulp if he found out.
My second is the weak willed behavior of the h. The h has been “bought” by the Prince Regent. But he is staying away from her until he settles the matter of his requested divorce. The h is very clear with the H that her word of honor is all she has and she won’t break her promises to the Prince. Until she does. Multiple times.
****** SPOILERS *******
The rest of this review contains some serious spoilers. Be warned.
At the end, the rejected married woman has some evil plot involving the h and her long lost brother. But we never find out what it is. It just kind of fizzles.
The h, of course, ends up pregnant. At three weeks from the first possible date of conception people are already noticing that she looks plump and that her tummy is showing PUUULEEEEZZE! That’s ridiculous.
The H gives Prince George a good telling off and steals his courtesan away so he can marry her. Prince George threatens to destroy him and his family. But we never find out if anything happens. The story just ends with no explanation.
The h had been saving money so she could open her own bakery and give up being a courtesan. As a wedding present the H buys her the building so she can still have her bakery. She’s a freakin duchess. She will not be running a bakery.
Speaking of which, she knows nothing about how to do what is required of a duchess. She is barely literate, has no experience in managing a large household, no social experience, etc. etc. How is this going to work?
I was completely unconvinced about their HEA. I believed that they loved each other and wanted to marry and raise their child together. I did not believe that all the external problems could be wrapped up in a neat little package to allow that HEA.
