Heat 11 / 10 (it's an erotic romance with chocolate and bananas )
Genre - mid-victorian, some suspense
For the most part I enjoyed this book. It had one trait that I do not appreciate. For the first 2/3 of the book, many aspects of the story were alluded to but not fully explained. For me, it was done to such a degree that I found it confusing rather than suspenseful. For this reason, and the VERY short HEA, it lost a bit.
The H is a prostitute, or at least he used to be. Five years ago he was injured in a fire. One side of his face has some burns on it and the backs of his hands are scarred as well. He is now about 40 yrs old. The h is a 36/37 yr old spinster. For most of her life, she cared for ageing/dying parents. Now she wants something for herself. When she was a debutante she saw the H at a ball. It's him she's chosen for her adventure. She has paid him to be her "lover" for one month, including taking her virginity.
They spend a lot of time in the bedroom (and other rooms). All the while the H is waiting for "the man" to come and take the h. He knows he's put her in danger. At first he doesn't care. But as he gets to know her, he wants to protect her. In the end, "the man" does take her and he has to go after her.
I do wish this story had a longer, more believable HEA. I would have appreciated the book much more if it had.

There is a companion one to this about a different couple but combining both stories. Gabriel's Woman I read them both at the same time so the stories gelled a bit better than reading them separate. I really liked both but I am an angst queen so that is no surprise.

I've read Gabriel's Woman but it's been a very long time. Does it provide a bit of closure for the couple in this book?

It has been years since I read them so my memory is fuzzy. I just know that I liked them both as I had never read Robin Schone before these two books and did try to read her after but nothing grabbed my attention like these did. I am going to say that it did but I don't know if I am mixing the stories up as to what happens in each. I believe it has the same bad guy in it and it was the first time I had ever read anything that had a H who had encounters with men AND women so my sheltered little mind (at that time!!) was completely blown. This was 18 years ago and at the beginning of my descent into romance madness.
I have both The Lover and Gabriel's Woman on Kindle and have not read them. Something held me back...maybe I wasn't sure it had an HEA? Thanks for this review and nudge to read
