This is very early JAK, actually written as Amanda James. It’s probably my least liked JAK of all that I’ve read, and I’ve read MANY of hers.
The h is hiding in Mexico. The H finds her in a tiny little backwater town. He has been sent to retrieve her by her supposed family, because she’s unstable and spoiled. The h thinks he’s an emotionless robot and does everything she can to provoke him. It ends up getting her nearly raped by the H.
Okaaaaay, now the H has a long way to go to redemption in my books. A few days later he “overrides her objections” in order to “make love to her”. This isn’t helping my opinion of the H. He does it again later in the story too.
The H eventually becomes convinced of the h’s story. The people who hired him are not her family and they want her back so they can kill her. Bam! Protective caveman appears.
This book was written in 1983, so the dubious consent is a bit more forgivable. But that isn’t my only issue with the book. The dialogue was just painful. “Oh, Judd, darling, please make love to me now.” Blech! If it wan't that, then she was intentionally trying to provoke his anger by being snarky and shrewish. The H was fairly two dimensional until the last few pages and the stilted dialogue made me cringe. There was very little plot. Won’t be reading this one again.

I tead this years ago and loved it and I remember rereading it a few times. Now Im afraid to read it with adult eyes. Ill just remember the enjoyment I got from it.

You may still love it! Then again, our tastes do change and certainly the genre has changed in terms of what behaviour is considered "romantic".
