The h is little better than a servant to her evil stepmother. The evil SM informs her that she has been betrothed to the “Devil of the Highlands” and he’ll be there any day to get her. The h rides out on her horse to be alone. A bit of hilarious mayhem occurs, resulting in her first meeting with her husband being somewhat less than ideal. They are wed later that day (still more comedy) and he rushes her back to Scotland immediately.
Although no one realizes it at first (including the h) someone is trying to kill the h. The scrapes she gets into are, at first, quite amusingly described. The H sometimes wonders if she might be a bit daft.
The h is not unhappy with the husband she’s ended up with, but he takes strong silent type to the extreme. There are many small misunderstandings that could have been avoided if he would just talk. She gets quite exasperated with him at times.
The H and h fall in love readily. There is no big misunderstandings or OW/OM drama. The main problem is the repeated attempts on the h’s life. You might think the culprit is predictable. There are a couple of obvious suspects. But you’ll be surprised by the real culprit.
This is the first book that I have read by this author. I enjoyed this story enough that I will go looking for the other two in the series.
