*I received an ARC from Black Opal Books and the author in return for an honest review.
I have to tell you, I was HATING this heroine Marcie, at first. I just could not imagine how the author could even begin to redeem her given all the truly horrific things she had done especially in regard to one of the other women who was in the Raiders’ slave camp.
But the author managed to redeem Marcie (who chooses to call herself Margaret from this point on), in part, by the end of the book. It rang true to me that Marcie’s victims, while they could understand why she acted as she did, still held resentment against her. Margaret’s redemption was not a neatly-tied bundle by the end of book 3. She still has a significant amount of restitution to give before she will be fully accepted and, possibly, forgiven especially since she has what amounts to a continuing multiple personalities disorder which manifests itself without warning.
Larz was a fantastic hero. Perhaps because of his human mother, and not just due to biology, he was able to recognize a worthiness within the heroine even when she was the “Evil Marcie” that no one else could see. Larz did sacrifice a lot for Marcie and it made me extremely mad at her because I also believed she was unworthy; I was just like everyone else in that I pre-judged her without knowing the circumstances that molded her character and actions.
The peaceful weapon at the end was a surprise and I’m anxious to read book 4 to see how this weapon changes the relationship between the aliens and the humans and the environmental situation of Earth.
