I had a hard time warming up to the h in this book. She was blatantly promiscuous and had sex with the H after only knowing him for a few minutes. In 1867 that would not be overlooked by others. Also, the style of this author is that the h and H talk to each other in a way that comes across (at least to me) as somewhat mean. At least until they get to know one another.
After that rocky start, the book got much better. From about page 100 on, I was really enjoying the story. It was fast paced and interesting. The h and H tried to stay away from one another but just couldn’t.
Then the ending left with me a number of questions. There are some unresolved issues surrounding the h and H and their future. Also, the female villain does not get the comeuppance she so richly deserves. I wanted a better ending.
The H never gets a divorce or annulment, so the h and H can never marry. Yet the epilogue has them with three children. The not quite ex-wife gets a huge amount of money and things from the H and is never heard from again. She was not the kind of woman to just disappear. The author needed to provide some resolution to these problems, not just ignore them.
Warning, the H and h do not cheat on each other, but technically the H is cheating on his wife. It didn’t bother me because she ran off with another man, abandoning him and their child. She only shows up again because she wants money. The H plans to get a divorce or annulment.
Thanks for the review, I enjoyed getting reacquainted thru your eyes. This is a book I would really like to re-read and see how it will set with me about 20 years after the last time I had it in my hands.

Well, if you do, I'd be interested to hear your thoughts on a current read.
Susan Johnson is such a hit & miss author for me. I loved The Outlaw but hated Seduction in Mind. I loved A Touch of Sin but hated Legendary Lover.
