I have very mixed feelings about this book. Having finished it, I am not inclined to run out and buy another by this author. Which isn’t to say I won’t try another, but I’m not eager for it.
The writing was well done. The places and the action are nicely described. The scenes with training the horses were my favorite parts. I could picture what was happening in my head. I loved the wolf. In fact, I think he was my favorite character in the whole book. And that’s the problem.
I just did not feel a connection to either the H or the h. The story is told mainly from the H’s pov. He’s a wounded H, deaf in one ear and with vertigo. He was a likable character for the most part. But he was also weak in ways that left me irritated. He completely ignored the h’s wishes in favor of what he wanted to do and then didn’t understand when she was upset with him. Finally, his indecision at the very end was just frustrating.
The h is a very strong character but she’s not a very nice person. I get that she has a lot of reasons to be angry but she came across as mean which made it difficult for me to sympathize. I think if more of the story had been told from her pov it might have made it easier to like her.
I like a long romance, when it’s well done. This one just felt about 100 pages too long. The whole wavering and indecision, at the end, could have been whittled down to a few pages. It didn’t add anything to the story. There was also a section with the Marquis de Sade which added nothing, except his name for later recall.
