The premise of this book was interesting. The h agrees to marry a condemned man, the day before he is to be executed. The H’s reason is to provide a guardian for his half-sister who can introduce her to society. The h agrees, in order to give herself a different future than the one she is facing. Instead of marrying her father’s choice of husband, she will be a wealthy, independent widow. The H, of course, insists on consummation so no annulment is possible. This all takes place in the Caribbean. The h returns to London, as a widow, with her new ward. Fast forward to an event in London a few months later. The H appears, in disguise, not so dead. Most of the rest of the book is him trying to convince the h to return to America with him as his wife.
I expected to like this book more than I did. I did like it, but I didn’t love it. The reason for that is the h. She had a lot of fears about loving and losing. She also fears violence. I just wanted to shake her. She was like a turtle that kept pulling its head back into its shell. Every time the H got close to her, she would retreat. I found it exasperating to read about her constant fears. There were not exactly irrational, but she used them as a shield against life. It made it difficult for me to identify with the h.
Other than that it is a good story. The twist at the end was predictable but nicely done. I like how that was resolved. The reappearance of the villain was not as well handled. That was a loose end that was not tied up to my satisfaction, but it’s a minor point.
