If I had to describe this story in one word it would be cute. It’s about small town life, how reputations are everything, and how a reputation can be ruined by single event. The h is considered to be a bit of an ugly duckling. She’s too tall, too flat, too plain, etc. Her mother despairs of her ever finding a husband. The H is new in town. He’s purchased an old, run down farm, and is trying to make a go of it. He’s handsome, muscular, and has the potential to be very well off. Every unmarried girl in town has her eye on him (along with their matchmaking mothers).
The H, is fascinated by, and attracted to, the ugly duckling. He sees slender where others see skinny. He likes that she’s kind, and intelligent. But he doesn’t think she’ll ever want anything to do with him.
The plot is surprisingly complex. There’s the town whore, and her son, that the h wants to help. The local blacksmith is friends with the H and wants to court the whore. The station master is courting the hs mother. The H’s neighbor is trying to hook him up with a nice fluttery girl, but he’s not interested.
This isn’t a steamy book but there are a couple of scenes, later in the book, that are nicely done. It isn’t a laugh out loud book, but it has several humorous moments. Over all, it was an enjoyable read. My only complaint would be the diary/journal entries of the H. They make him sound nearly illiterate and it doesn’t quite fit with how he speaks or thinks in the rest of the book. It was just a bit overdone.
