Lady Catherine "Cat" was responsible for her 5 younger siblings, while her mother went on her honeymoon with her 5th spouse.
Cat wanted to entice Giles, a marquess, to prompt him to propose. Cat sought tutoring by rake Thomas. Thomas fled to his
country home after serving as a spy (he used all means, including seduction of female informants) & soldier for the Crown.
Cat was disappointed in the rough look, clothing and manners of Thomas. Cat's family had limited finances, ditto for Thomas?
Cat informed Thomas he was too old and lacked amorous skills. Not! Thomas critiqued Cat's attire and allure, taught how to flirt
with her eyes, how to make vague offers and to pique the interest of her man of choice. Cat's formerly flirty and now religious
great-aunt served as her chaperone.
Cat and Thomas teased and bantered, but denied their feelings. Cat visited Paris for a time. She had to negotiate blockades and
deal with mercenary drivers, to flee when all in Paris fled. Napoleon arrived in Paris after he escaped Elba. This reader felt the
fear and urgency of those desperate to leave.
The H +h had some starts and stops, but they shared love.
