Republic of Texas 1843. I gave this 1 of 5 stars. DNF just before halfway.
Susan Wiggs wrote this in 1987, her 1st romance. Please don't think of this as representative of her writing ability. IMO much better HRs by SW include: The Charm School, The Great Chicago Fire Trilogy, The Horse Master's Daughter.
I'd be hard-pressed to decide who I disliked more "government man" hero Justin or would-be detective Shiloh. Justin reported to Henderson who reported to the US Pres. BTW the FBI was not created until 1896. Justin + good guys were trying to foil a violent, traitorous plot by Texas judge West.
Shiloh captured Justin for West (w/o knowing the nefarious scheme by West siding w/ Mexicans). West wanted to force a wedding on Justin who seduced the judge's dtr. An experienced woman before the seduction, per Justin. Prest-o change-o Justin forced Shiloh to marry him before he's delivered to West.
The leads overreacted to each other and had heated verbal exchanges. He slept off/ on in the bunkhouse. Yet one soulful kiss or sexy interlude made them close, for 5 minutes. Shiloh undermined Justin's official work and put herself in danger too many times. She earned her TSTL badge.
A silly plot. Please grab something from your TBR pile instead.
