This book is the fourth installment in a multi-author 4 book series. The common thread is that the kingdom of Elden was attacked by a blood sorcerer 20 years ago. To save her children, the queen cast a spell to fling them far and wide. But each of them must return by midnight on the 20th anniversary of the fall of Elden in order to save the kingdom. This book is the story of the youngest child, Micah. I read this book as a standalone and it was sufficient. The story is mostly about Micah and Lily. The fight at the end is a fairly small part.
Lily is the daughter of the blood sorcerer who defeated Elden 20 years ago. She hates her father above all things. She has learned of the deadline and managed to use magic to get her to the Black Castle where Micah lives. She knows that the blood sorcerer managed to pervert the queen’s spell enough that Micah doesn’t know who he is. Time has almost run out. She has to get him to remember before it’s too late.
Micah is the Lord of the Abyss. Each night he gathers all the rotten souls that are trying to avoid the abyss and drag them there. Everyone fears him, except his Lily.
The author has done a fantastic job of creating a fantasy world that I could easily imagine. I really liked the characters she created too. Micah is, in some ways, still a child. He fell into a magical sleep at 5 and awoke a fully grown man. He bears a huge responsibility for keeping the world free of horrible souls. He is unfailingly kind to those who need his help. Lily is incredibly courageous in spite of her fears. She decides to take the physical love that Micah offers her while she can because she knows that when he remembers his past and knows who she is, he will reject her.
Tropes – virgin H, virgin h, unattractive h but the H loves her anyway,
