The author first started giving Kostya release dates 4 years ago. She'd announce a date, start pre-orders at Amazon then cancel the release. I know this turned quite a few fans off. I was excited to find the book on Amazon. As I told one of my friends, I 1-clicked so hard I thought I'd broken my mouse.
I read all the previous books in the series and thought I'd remembered enough of the story arc to jump right in.
I loved the story. Holly and Kostya were a wonderful couple. Everything we expect from a Russian Protector story is there. Holly is smart, capable and doesn't hold a grudge when Kostya has to tend to his own business. Kostya is protective and tries to be considerate while battling his fears that his job will put Holly at risk. The story arc of Holly's parentage and her association to the Russians was suspenseful. Overall, I think this was a great addition to the series.
I wanted so much to give the book 5 stars but I just can't.
One would think that after waiting 4 years the book would've been edited and proof read. Unfortunately, there were some glaring editorial issues. The kind where whole sentences, and in one case nearly an entire paragraph was repeated with different wording. I also think there may have been a time or two that the wrong character's name was used. I'm sure the author was trying to bridge her other contemporary series' with this book. If you haven't read the Fighting Connolly's series or Seduced by the Loan Shark you may wonder who some of the characters are. I felt that some of the past characters were mentioned just for the sake of giving them a sentence or two. Luckily most were only mentioned in passing and not a integral part of Holly and Kostya's story. I did find it a bit confusing that Holly's chapters were told in the first person and Kostya's were told in the third person.
If you're a fan and can overlook the few editing errors and changing perspectives I'm sure you'll enjoy the plot. I truly hope the author is back to writing and continues the series. There are many more characters that need their stories told. This is still one of the best Russian mafia series, IMO.
