The h is caught nearly undressed, by the H, in a house she thought was empty. She is trying on jewelry, and the H accuses her of theft. She screams when she sees his face, as one side is disfigured by scars. Her brother challenges the H to a dual but the h stops it. They end up married the next day. When he thought her just a thief he offered her a deal. One command, one night in his bed, for each pearl in a very long necklace, and then she could go free.
Now he believes he still has the same bargain with her. She'll only stay as long as he has pearls with which to command her. Then she'll go back to her family. After all, he's dying and she'll soon be a widow anyway. He comes to her at night in the dark. She rarely seems him during the day, and when she does, he's wears a hood to hide his face.
Someone is trying to kill one of them, but he doesn't believe her until it is almost too late. I truly enjoyed this book. It only lost the 1/2 star because the h could be a bit impetuous or silly sometimes. Of course, her whole family is OTT ridiculous, so it's only to be expected. For those of you familiar with Celeste Bradley, the ever present Button plays a part in this story as well.
