I got quite a bit of listening / reading done over the weekend. I started with the very short prequel novellas The Shell Game and Pros and Cons, introducing ex SEAL now FBI agent Kate O'Hare and international thief and con man Nicholas Fox.
The novellas were short and fun. They laid the groundwork for the rivalry between the thief and FBI agent.
I moved on the the full length novel The Heist. After spending years trying to catch Nick Fox, Kate O'Hare finally catches her man. Before he can go to trial he escapes. Kate caught him once and so now Nick Fox should become someone else's problem. Except she just can't walk away. Fox has eluded and taunted her for years. Not to mention he's kind of hot and chasing Nick Fox is a close as Kate's come to a date in a long time. Before Kate can get back on Nick's trail her boss gives her a special assignment. Work with Nick Fox 'off the books' to catch criminals that have escaped justice. They begin their assignment tracking down a banker who stole half a billion dollars and is hiding out on his very own Indonesian island. Kate, Nick, a ragtag crew and Kate's retired military father work together to bring the banker back to the US for trial.
I love the Stephanie Plum series by Evanovich and I wasn't disappointed with this new series. It's not quite so funny but makes up for that with the sheer brilliance of the scams Nick Fox thinks up. There's plenty of romantic banter. Nick and Kate are two people who shouldn't be attracted to each other but they are. I was thoroughly entertained.
Scott Brick is the narrator and he's excellent. It took me an hour or so to get used to him narrating light comedy. The last time I listened to him he was narrating The Passage series by Justin Cronin. That series is as far from comedy as one can get.
If you enjoy humor, along with a well thought out and executed plan you may enjoy The Heist.
