The Starship Refugees series by Susan Kelley is about a generational colony space ship still very far from it's planned destination. The resources are dwindling putting the entire mission at stake. In an effort to increase the chances for the bulk of the colonists to reach their destination it's decided that small colony groups will be dropped off at potential planets along the way. In the first book, Starship Refugees I: The Alien and the Teacher, the first group of colonists is ill prepared for the challenges they face in starting a colony. Lucky for them Painter Traveler who's an explorer for his people happens to be studying the planet and sees the colonists land. The colonists wouldn't survive without Painter's help but he's hiding secrets. He's from the planet Aleta. His people thrived on civil war and underwent selective breeding to produce the best warriors. In doing so they doomed themselves. Their women rarely survive pregnancy and few infants survive. Fewer Aletians are born every year. Their society is now a rigid caste system. Travelers are considered warrior throwbacks and not valued. They are sent into space to explore and hopefully find a compatible race. Painter falls in love with the teacher Gwen. Towards the end of the first book Gwen reveals that the next batch of colonists are being dropped off on the planet Feron. Painter knows that his fellow Traveler, Elgin is studying that planet. He also knows from Elgin's reports the planet Feron is on the verge of massive volcanic eruptions that will destroy all life. Painter contacts Elgin with the hope that the colonists can be warned before they land.

Starship Refugees II: The Alien and the Amazon is Elgin and Jess' story. Elgin is too late to warn the colonists. They've already landed on Feron. The best he can do is help them and hope help can arrive before the volcanoes erupt. Jess is very tall for a woman and never thought she'd have a mate. She's drawn to Elgin, who is larger than she is. Jess and Elgin have to lead the colonists as far from the volcanoes as possible. When Elgin leaves the planet to find out when help is arriving a fellow Traveler warns him that the Aletians plan on only saving the women. Elgin must choose between Jess and the human colonists and his own people. I liked Jess and Elgin although I thought Jess was a bit too insistent that Elgin confess his love for her. She knew that Elgin's people have tried to breed emotion out. It just seemed too rushed and a bit cruel to expect Elgin to behave as a human man would. I did like the story overall and look forward to reading the next book in the series.
