Gavin's Song - Jamie Begley
This is a difficult one to grade. For me it would be 1.5 out of 4. For someone who has not read all of this series up to now it would probably be a 3 out of 4. On to my rants and raves!
I have been waiting for this one so when I saw it, I clicked and started reading without looking into it at all. Mistake. The main H and h do not even meet until the last few pages. This is obviously a to be continued type of story which I hate and had I known, I would have waited for them all to be out before reading any. That is on me for not checking it out first. My feelings on this series range from really good (Shade) to really boring (Lucky) and I may or may not occasionally bring up the epilogue of Shade's book when I feel the need for a good cry. I would not be reading this one again but it wasn't bad, just repetitive of things I already read in the other books, making it way too long and not focused on the romance at all.
Raves: The story kept me reading even when I realized that the romance was not going to happen so it was interesting. If this was the first book in this series that I had picked up, I would want to keep reading even being pi**ed at the tbc ending.
Rants: The first chapter was so confusing I came close to putting it down. I did not recognize anyone as characters I knew until one happened to mention having a son named John and I eventually realized this is Shade's father. Every single person in this book has at least two names (club name and real name minimum). It seriously took me forever to realize which one of Sex Piston's crew was the h's sister since they all have different names to different people.
Whatever "secret" the h supposedly knows that is worth killing for had better be really good. The "good guys" crashed a freaking plane to make people believe she was dead. Don't get me started on one character, while they were on the crashing plane, telling the h that she would be fine and don't panic cause she will only be under the (presumably freezing) water for a little while. She was 3. But don't panic while you drown. There wasn't anything easier than crashing a plane with children (h and her sister, I was not clear on who else was on the plane) on it? Really? Everyone treated the 3 year old like she was 20 years older. Then she is in hiding for about 20 years because someone might recognize her? Again, she was 3!!! Unless she is the spitting image of mom or dad, who is going to freaking recognize a 3 year old dead person 20 some odd years later?? Like I said this secret better be really good and worth all this secret agent crap.
Having read all of the series up to this, Gavin's story was pretty much all ready covered for me so his portions were more of a memory jog than anything else. Nothing was shocking or unknown like it would have been for a new reader. For me, way too much time spent on going over his story yet again. This was the h's story for me and not enough of that or them together.
I am having some trouble with the H's character. The things he goes through are horrible and last way too long. I really don't get how he is basically ok, other than occasionally killing the people who tortured him. He should be way more messed up than he is and nobody seems to feel that way other than me! Considering some of the guys saw the tapes that were made of the things done to him, no one seems to be overly concerned with his mental state. I don't recall anyone expressing much concern. More of a shake it off mentality I guess but feels like they are being insensitive dicks. Then again, who am I talking about? These guys are not models of sensitivity or caring for others. It just feels kind of careless or something. I really wish I had noticed it wasn't a complete story because I do want to finish it now and have to wait for however long it will be for the next one. I really need a good book, I am in a months long mediocre slump:(
