Bitten was about werewolves. The main protagonist is Elena, a woman who wasn't born a werewolf but was bitten and turned. Very few survive the turning process so werewolves are extremely rare. Elena estimates 35 total. She's the only known female werewolf. She abandoned her pack and lives in Toronto and tries to be 'human'. She hides what she is from her live-in boyfriend. She constantly bemoans internally about all that was taken from her when she was turned.
She's called back to her pack and has to help them defend against an ex pack member who wants revenge. Daniel has held a grudge against the pack since childhood. He's recruited other werewolves and they've helped serial killers escape prison then turned them into werewolves as Daniel's fighting force.
The majority of the book is Elena's internal and verbal whining to whoever will listen. Granted, she did have a rough childhood. It was her ex fiancé Clayton that bit her and turned her into a werewolf. All the other pack members seem to bend over backwards to keep from upsetting or making Elena angry. She hates Clay but she has sex with him (several times). Clay loves her and tries so hard to apologize for biting her. He does anything he can to make Elena happy. She spends an enormous amount of energy being angry at everyone and everything. Worse, she often simply ignores all the problems around her and hopes they'll go away. It wouldn't have bothered me as much if Elena was still a teenager but she's a grown woman. I found her to be a very weak heroine. It isn't until the last 10% of the book when Daniel kidnaps and beats Clayton that she stops constantly thinking of herself, being immature and tries to help her pack.
I didn't find Elena to be a likable character at all. It was such a shame because the bones of a great story were there. Elena ruined it for me. I prefer a stronger, more focused heroine. On the bright side the book was well written and the secondary characters were interesting. Unfortunately I have no interest in another book with Elena as the main character so I'm abandoning this series.
