The Alien and the Slave is the most recent book in the Starship Refugees series. This book doesn't start where the last left off. It may be the 4th book in the series but it's also the 1st book for the second generational ship that was believed lost. Just like the ship in the first three books this one was failing as well. The earthlings must land on the first planet that can sustain them. What they didn't know is that the planet Fangor has been invaded and an occupational force of aliens have enslaved the Fangorians. Already weak from living on a failing ship the Earthlings are captured. The old and weak are killed and the rest enslaved. They're split up and integrated into the existing Fangorian slave crews mining ore for the evil aliens, the Deacons.
Roma is the earth girl assigned to Mars' crew. As much as Roma hates being a slave she admits that she and her fellow earthlings are in no physical shape to rebel. They need to gain strength and learn from the Fangorians how to live on the planet before they can think of escape. Not all the earthlings feel the same but they quickly learn that rebellion will not be tolerated. The Deacons along with Fangorian traitors are cruel.
As Roma searches for a way to save her people she's unaware that the Fangorians have been working on their own escape plan.
Roma and Mars started out a promising couple but I felt that they both were keeping too many secrets from each other. I understand why they didn't confide. I felt like their relationship was based on sex and not acceptance or trust. There were quite a few secondary characters but few had any depth. The ending was a bit rushed as well. I'm not sure if this is the only book the Earthlings on Fangor will get or not. It wasn't completely clear if the Deacons had been defeated.
I still liked the book and found it entertaining enough. I hope the next book gets back to the other generational ship and the Aletians. I want to know what happened to them.
