Let Love Find You – Reid/Locke Family 4 – Johanna Lindsay

The h of this story is starting her third season and all her friends are already married. She’s determined to fall in love (and catch a husband) this season. The H is a horse breeder and illegitimate, although that is not well known. The H is nicknamed Cupid because he has recently gained a reputation for helping people find their ideal mate.
The h meets a man that she is finally attracted to (not the H) but he is horse mad and she is afraid to get back on a horse, having been badly injured as a child. The h and H strike a bargain. He will help her get over her fears and learn to ride again so she can possibly be courted by the horse mad fellow.
Of course, the h ends up being more attracted to the H then to any of her other possible suitors. The H is very attracted to her, but he knows it can never be, because he is illegitimate and she is a duke’s daughter.
I started out quite liking the story. It had a lot of potential. There was a bit of danger because someone seemed to be trying to harm the H. There was the forbidden attraction between the H and h. But somehow it just kind of fizzled. The plot went nowhere. We never got to know either character any better.
The h was too immature for my tastes. She over reacted every time the H did something to annoy her. The H made all sorts of assumptions about her and her family, without getting to know them. When it came to the emotional parts of the story (including but not only the intimate parts) the writing was very superficial. I wasn’t pulled into the feelings of the characters. There was no emotion behind the intimacy.
I was also disappointed by the lack of historical atmosphere. They rode horses or carriages, wore long dresses and went to balls. That was about the sum total of the historical feeling to the book. This is my second Johanna Lindsey book and they both left me underwhelmed. I think this author just isn’t for me.
