3 out of 5⭐
I was in the mood for a romantic suspense. I haven't read a Rebecca Zanetti book in quite some time. Hidden is part of KU, I thought it would be perfect.
Pippa has been hiding out from a cult for years. Malcolm was an undercover cop with burn out. Mal moves into the house beside Pippa. Then Mal gets recruited by Angus Force, a semi alcoholic federal profiler to help investigate cases no one else wants to put the time or money into. All the other investigative recruits are misfits as well. Angus has a german shepherd that drinks, wears high heels and eats lipstick. I didn't particularly care for the dog and it's eccentricities. It was very un-dog like and created a fantasy feeling to an otherwise contemporary story.
Pippa is emotionally damaged from being the crazy cult leaders 'chosen one'. She was able to escape the cult the day before her 18th birthday, just before her marriage to the crazy cult leader, the Prophet. Mal has his own emotional issues. He'd been undercover trying to bring down the mob. He got close to the mafia head's son and ended up having to shoot him. Once Mal is recruited by Angus Force he's assigned the case to investigate the cult. He needs to get close to Pippa, get all the cult info out of her that he can and determine if the Prophet has a terrorist plot planned.
Pippa lies to Mal about who she is and her past with the cult. Mal lies to Pippa about being undercover with the cult she's hiding from. Two people who have no business entering into a relationship with each other. Surprisingly they were good together until half way through the book. Then the Dom / Sub spanking began.
I am soooo very over anything BDSM. I almost DNF the book. It set the tone for the rest of the book. I stuck with it but skimmed past the rest of the sex scenes.
Pippa learns that Mal is undercover investigating the cult. Mal discovers that Pippa was the Prophet's 'chosen one'. They argue, they make up. Pippa returns to the cult to save a friend. Mal is captured and has to escape to save Pippa. All before the Prophet and his followers blow up a women's march in Washington, DC.
It's not likely I'll continue the series. I've been passing on books that have any form of BDSM, I don't care if it's light or hardcore. It's one thing if I see a warning in the description and choose to read the book anyway, it's another to think I'm getting a 'classic' romantic suspense and be blindsided. My gripe is the author / publisher neglected to add anything about spanking in the book description. Not on Amazon, not on Goodreads. I'm so tired of authors and publishers not representing their books accurately. It there is spanking, being tied up, etc. there should be a warning in the book description. If there had been I would have passed on the book.
