Genre - Regency Romance, danger at the end
This book is best read after the other books in it's series. It isn't necessary, but I found that the snippets about the hero of this book that are given in the other seven, add to his character. For 16 years, Royce has been known only as Dalziel. He was a spy master for the English Government. His father banished him from his home for the supposed disgrace of being a spy. Now, when he finally has finished his time as a spy master and is about to reconcile with his father, his father dies. This is how the book opens. Royce is now returning home as the Duke of Wolverstone, to bury his father. "It wasn't supposed to be like this."
He is immediately set upon by the grand dames of the ton. They insist he marry immediately (this is the weakest part of the plot). They assume that he will pick some woman, sight unseen, based on breeding and family. This is how his family has always done it. Royce wants something different. He chooses his chatelaine, Minerva. But then he moves too quickly and ties his own hands. Now he has to convince her to marry him without her knowing that is what he is doing.
This book is one of my top five romances. This is in spite of the weak opening plot point, the cheesy name and the even cheesier cover. It's all about the characters. Royce is powerful, arrogant and very intelligent. Minerva is equally intelligent, and quick witted. She cares deeply about the duchy and it's people. She knows exactly how to handle Royce. While there is a villain lurking in the background, he has no real effect until the end. This book isn't about balls and dresses. It's about two wonderfully written characters.
Laurens signature style, an overuse of her thesaurus, is present in this book. But I don't care. Royce is just too good a hero for it to affect my enjoyment of the story.
