I read this book right after one of the Shannon McKenna's McCloud Brothers books. By comparison, it seems a bit "light". The author doesn't create the same level of extreme suspense and intense non-stop action. However, it is a good book. Just not a great book.
There is a good balance between the suspense aspect and the romantic aspect. It is definitely a romance. It has all the elements of a good romance. It is also very much a thriller/suspense. The H is kick-ass but so is the h. She dukes it out with bad guys and rarely needs help. There are two aspects that keep this from being a great book IMO.
1) The h is just too stubborn in her desire to do everything herself. It bordered on bad decision making. 2) The really suspenseful things that happened to the h don't happen in real time. We don't live them with the h. We find out about them when she tells the H what happened to her. It greatly reduced the intensity of the story. "So honey, how was your day. Well, this nasty man caught me, beat me up and threatened to kill me, but other than that ok, how was your day?"
There are also an element to this author's writing that keep them from being GREAT books for me. There is very little interaction with the special ops team. In book 1 and this book, the H was isolated from his team until the very end. I prefer books like McKenna's McCloud Brothers or Maya Banks KGI series, where the guys work as a team to accomplish things.
This sounds like a lot of complaints, but I did really enjoy the book. There was one moment near the end of the book that I will share SPOILER SPOILER that was awesome. There is a female villain in this book. Near the end she grabs the h and threatens her with a knife. The H stands back and lets the h deal with it herself. He eggs her on, shouting encouragement while his friend watches in amazement. It was an awesome moment!.
