True Fantasy is not something I normally choose, any mention of wizards and dragons and long epic journeys I tend to struggle to read. I do like fantasy books that stay clear of these plotlines so my fantasy favorites tends to be more paranormal fantasy or urban fantasy and I tend to listen rather than read them.
Some I have enjoyed The Book of Law Trilogy by Joe Abercrombie, in audio, this series was the best thing I have ever listened too, the narrator was fantastic. The author is male and his books probably appeal more to guys, he can be cruel and ruthless so not for everyone.
The Rivers of London series by Ben Aaronovitch, in audio, a good listen.
Fitz and the Fools series by Robin Hobb, read 9 of these books after my brother recommended, did enjoy them surprisingly.
Just last week listened to Strange Practice by Vivian Shaw which I enjoyed a lot and will continue with the series. More my style.
I also enjoyed Poison Study when I read it many years ago, I never continued with series as the books were pricy in Aus at the time. I may need to revisit the series.
I don't read as much general fantasy as I used to. Now I read mostly paranormal romance. My all time favorite book series is the Dragon Prince (plus the Star Scroll) series by Melanie Rawn. Other fantasy favorites are The Mallorean and Belgariad series by David and Leigh Eddings, the Drizzt books by R.A. Salvatore, the Pendragon Cycle by Stephen Lawhead, the Pern novels by Anne McCaffrey, the Death Gate Cycle by Margaret Weiss and Tracy Hickman, and the Riddle-Master series by Patricia McKillip. I'll also add the Mayfair Witches series by Anne Rice, although I don't know what to really call it - fantasy, pnr, urban fantasy, or maybe a class all its own considering it is Anne Rice.
