The h in this story was one of Florence Nightingale's renowned nurses. She meets the H while tending his wounds in the Crimea. The story begins with her bringing his baby to his family, after the H dies. Except he isn't dead and she isn't the mother. The H has lost all memory of his time in the Crimea. His memories stop a few days before he shipped out and begin again when he wakes up in a hospital, 18 months later. It's been six months and his memories have not returned.
The h helped one of the other nurses, who was pregnant with the H's baby. But the actual mother abandons the baby with the h. The h falls in love with the baby and takes it to England, to the H's family, when she learns that the H has died. Except she lies, and says she is the baby's mother. She does this so she can stay with the baby she loves. But then she finds out the H is still alive and now she's trapped. She and the H marry. They fall in love. But she keeps her secret and lives in fear of his memory returning and her deception coming out.
The only thing that kept this from being a five star read for me was the fact that the h didn't tell the H the truth. I understand not telling him right away. But there were several times when she should have. I get it, this is the point of the story, I just didn't like the deception.
