SOLVED: He dumps her on her Birthday, I think.

Looking for a book I read several years ago.  Couple are older and I believe live in seperate towns.  She packs her bags to go see him for (I believe) her birthday weekend.  She thinks he might propose.  Instead he tells her hs is getting back with his ex. (unsure if children involved, but maybe).  This comes out of the blue for her and she is heart broken.  He later realizes he made the wrong decision and wants her back.  Can't remember what they each did for a living, but my mind drifts towards firefighter for him, but don't let that factor in too much. Pretty sure she makes him work to get back in there.  Thanks for any help.
