I'm having a hard time deciding whether I like this book or not. The story and the characters were quite good. But overall, the feeling was a little superficial. Just a little too light and fairy-tale'ish. I think it was because the H was wounded (recently blinded in a fight) and hiding from life. With that kind of a premise, you expect more emotional angst. All we got from this hero was grumpy.
Everything rushed along at too quick a pace. There was no time to savor the H's angst, or the h's homeless/penniless plight. Even the humorous parts (and there were a lot of potentially amusing situations) were wasted because they were not fully fleshed out. The h experiences some angst because she's plain and the H thinks she's beautiful. The resolution to that conundrum was over in the blink of an eye.
Even the resolution to the final conflict was only half done. SPOILER ** - the theft is never dealt with.
I neither need nor want great angst in my books, but I also don't want to read children's fairy tales with sex! I wanted more of everything from this book.
