St. Helen's Trilogy - by Jayne Castle (JAK)
4 / 5
Heat: 4-6 / 10
Genre – paranormal/sci-fi
Each book in this trilogy is a separate romance involving a different couple. They can be read stand-alone. But they are so similar, that a single review will suffice.
The author has created a world set somewhere in the future on a distant planet. There are no aliens involved. The premise is that about 200 years prior, a “curtain” opened, allowing people from earth to travel back and forth between this new, uninhabited world, and earth. Many people settled on this world they called St. Helen’s. Then, after 50 years, the curtain suddenly closed, stranding the colonists. All their technology (computers, cars, etc.) disintegrated quite quickly. At the same time, humans began to evolve paranormal abilities. Most people developed a talent, to a greater or lesser degree, the rest became prisms. People with talent cannot focus their talent for more than a few seconds, without a prism. Hence a synergistic relationship is required.
Each story involves a man with a very high level (off the charts) talent, and a female who is a rare prism capable of focusing extremely high talent. Marriage is for life, no divorce allowed. Consequently, marriages are almost always handled through high tech matching agencies. Of course, each of these men finds his own match.
Amaryllis – Lucas is a detector/illusion talent. He hires Amaryllis to help him find the person that is selling corporate secrets to his competitor. Murder and mayhem ensues.
Zinnia – Nick is a matrix talent. He hires Zinnia to help him track down a lost journal of his father’s, to prove that his father did not commit suicide. Murder and mayhem ensues.
Orchid – Rafe is a hunter/strategy talent. Rafe is hiring prism talents in the hopes of finding a match like his friends Lucas and Nick did. He finds Orchid just as he starts to investigate a stolen alien artifact. Murder and mayhem ensues.
Each story in this set is unique in the mystery elements. The characters are somewhat similar, mostly differentiated by their talents. The way the romance proceeds is nearly identical. Still, JAK is an excellent writer and I enjoyed all three stories, which I read one right after the other.
NOTE: these books are a ridiculous price for Kindle right now. I wouldn't recommend paying that unless you're DYING to read them. I picked up DTB versions at used book stores.
