The older I get, the more I gravitate toward these. It's not that I object to spice in a romance novel, but the spicy scenes get repetitive, and less adept authors tend to use them fill up the pages. You can't get away with this in a "clean" novel, so the odds are better of getting actual plot and characters, and I don't have to skip the sex scenes for pure boredom.
You can't get a cup of tea big enough or a book long enough to suit me.

I like a good spicy scene but I totally agree with you that they can get repetitive and boring. A skilled author can write a spicy romance novel with less sex or even closed door sex because it's the chemistry between the H and the h the author creates via good dialogue and interactions that make a book sizzle. A good example of this is A Promise of Fire by Amanda Bouchet. (Not a rec for clean romance and the sex is open door!) The H and h don't sleep together until the end of the book 1 and yet wow! The chemistry between the H and the h gave it plenty of spice. He ties the h to him with a magical rope that only he can untie. She deals with it by becoming "invisible" at times. Lol!

Same here, the older I get the more I look for reads that have a good plot and actual conversations in between couples instead of just jumping into bed at first meeting.

HA! I feel the same way. I want a plot and conversation. The jump into the sack within minutes of meeting or falling into insta-luv, hubba, hubba, actually bores me now. I want a story, I want an H & h I can identify with and enjoy. I want to read about their relationship building. I enjoy the ups and downs that go into building that relationships. The straight down and dirty s*x is boring. Maybe I'm past that stage, more mature, getting old... 🎃

I'm so glad that I'm not the only one that feels this way. I'm so tired of the instant lust. I want a story and relationship building.
