I read "Attachments" by Rainbow Rowell. This was the author's first book written in 2011. She is a journalist just like the h in the story.
The story takes place in 1999 just before the millennium starts. I enjoyed the story and humor, but I would not consider it a traditional romance. Some would put the story in a "slow burn" romance category. It was more a women's fiction or chick lit book to me. The two main characters are in their late 20s and really lost on their paths in life. Both work at a newspaper. The h is a journalist and the H works in IT security. They have both fallen for the wrong people along the way and are stuck in their lives.
The main characters don't get together until the last chapters of the book. The h has been in a stagnant relationship for years and the H has never gotten over his first love from high school and college. He lives at home and has never moved on. What I liked about the story was the hilarious emails that bounce back and forth between the h and her best friend at work. I had some laugh out loud moments often. And the H's thoughts about their exchanges is just as funny.
I liked that the narrative was from the H's point of view. He is a quirky IT nerd that falls for the h over time by reading the emails sent to her best friend. He's never seen or met her in person, but wants to find the courage to do so. He has to read everyone's emails at work so when inappropriate words are flagged, he can issue warnings. Except he doesn't warn these two girls because their emails are so entertaining and funny. He continues to read about their lives each day. He falls for the h sight unseen. But he is guilty for knowing so much without her knowledge. He wants to be honest with her if he pursues a meeting. Meanwhile, the h has started to notice the cute IT guy and is secretly attracted to him despite living with a rock band musician who mostly ignores her and lives off her generosity. She needs to get off that merry-go-round but won't be honest with herself about it.
I'm glad I read the story just because it was so different. It was interesting to see these two people change and get out of the mire they were stuck in. It slowed down in the middle some, but the journey and ending were really cute. There were no explicit intimate scenes in the book, but it didn't need any. It was all about their character development and how they matured before they get together. I would recommend this book for those who want a break from traditional romance stories and need some light humor. This would make a good vacation read or audio book while traveling. I bet the audio would be fun with the right narrators.
This ebook is very expensive. $14.99!
My Overdrive library had the ebook for free. I recommend you check your library first or wait until this book is on sale if you are interested in reading it.
