I am not typically a fan of mafia romances or anti-heros in general. What I do love are OTT jealous possessive heros. Whaddya know, these books are rife with this type of H so now I'm reading them. Crow did not disappoint. While I did not enjoy this novel as much as the Crimelord series, I was entertained for the entire book.
This book is about Mackenzie (Mack), the h, who knowingly goes into the underworld to look for information on her best friend who's gone missing. Mack has had a hard life and is pretty tough. She gains the attention of the Irish mob by fighting and winning in an underground MMA match. I personally love a spunky, butt kicking h so I was hoping she would have more than this one fight. Unfortunately, that was it though she does some other minor butt kicking through the book. Ultimately, her goal is to gain the attention of one of the lower level mobsters so she can get information and a job at the bar where her friend worked and is owned by the Irish mob. Instead she gains the attention of the H, Lachlan Crow, who is third in the hierarchy but hoping to be second (the underboss) like his grandfather was up until he was murdered. He doesn't trust or like Mack at first and she doesn't trust or like Lach. There are a lot of details I don't want to spoil that end up drawing these two characters together despite their enmity. I spent a lot of the novel just waiting for the other shoe to drop. They both have a lot of secrets and just waiting for the secrets to come out had my stomach in knots.
Overall, this was a good read with a likeable H and h. I would recommend this book if you like mafia stories or anti-heros.
***** Possible Triggers ***** This is a mob book so expect violence though it wasn't that graphic, in my opinion. The h is almost raped twice in one scene. There is woman that is raped but it isn't descriptive. There is also some violence against several female characters including the h but those parts are not lengthy.
