This series consists of three, barely related books. The premise in each book is that humans have expanded beyond the reaches of our solar system. In each case, an uninhabited planet has been colonized. There may be evidence of past civilizations, but humans are the only sentient life on the planet. Each book is a stand alone story. Each one takes place in a different world/environment.
Sweet Starfire
4 /5 stars
Heat 5/10
Genre - sci-fi (mild suspense)
The humans have evolved/developed into two distinct classes called harmonics and wolves. Sometimes a wolf is born to harmonic parents and vise versa. The h is a wolf born to harmonic parents. She is searching for legendary artifact that will help her gain the telepathic abilities she needs to be a true harmonic. The H is a wolf who is reluctantly helping her.
The story takes them out of a city and into the jungle. The cities are protected by shields because the flora and fauna on this planet are very dangerous. Not only do they end up pursued by bad guys, they have to struggle against the plants and animals too.
Crystal Flame
4.5 / 5
Heat 6/10
Genre - sci-fi (mild suspense)
Trigger warning - this is a chauvinistic society where women can be beaten for disobedience. It doesn't happen but it is threatened.
The h has been brought up with one goal in mind. Her sole purpose in life is to kill the man the murdered her father and brother. To this end, she has contracted a "trade marriage" with the right hand man of her target. She fails to kill him and now has the follow through on her obligation as a trade wife. (in this context trade means commerce).
The H and h are travelling to a remote area to determine why the supply of a "sand" needed by healers has dried up. There are bad guys after them and destiny/fate plays a large role in this story.
Even though I really enjoyed it, I found the chauvinism was a bit OTT at times. It made me uncomfortable. The H was bossy and overbearing in the extreme on several occasions. He routinely dismissed the h's experiences, intuition and feelings. He did admit his errors though and apologized properly for his mistakes.
Shield's Lady
4.25 / 5
Heat 6/10
Genre sci-fi (mild suspense)
Two ships travelling together crashed on separate continents. Until recently, neither knew if the others survived. Two different types of communities developed. The h is from the straitlaced, businesslike eastern continent. She failed to make the grade at university and fled to the western continent to try and redeem herself. The people on the western continent are flamboyant in the extreme. On both continents there are class systems (more like guilds). On the western continent there is a unique class called shields. The H is a shield.
Shields are different. They have the right to search for a mate in any class. When they find one, they are married the moment they first make love. But the woman must agree ahead of time. Of course the h agrees without realizing what she's agreeing too. The H is partially incapacitated at the time and doesn't properly explain.
I loved the story line in this book but didn't find the characters quite as compelling as those in Crystal Flame. I particularly didn't like the h as much as the h in Crystal flame.
This is a great series, and all three books are worth the read.
