Brighter than the Sun – KGI Book 11 – by Maya Banks
2 /5
Heat 5/10 (total of one explicit scene)
Genre – romantic suspense (mild)
I’ve read all the KGI books up to this. They started off great. But after Steele’s story, they started to go downhill. Now I know this author can write well, her highlander books are wonderful. But this hot mess was bad, bad, bad. I swear, this was ghost written by a twelve year old girl (except for the single mediocre sex scene).
I just cannot believe that Maya Banks wrote this! The writing was amazingly amateurish. Bad dialogue. Bad soliliquies. Endless dithering internal dialogue – also badly written. The plot could have been OK, but it was just so poorly executed it was painful.
Rusty (remember her, the adopted sister) is helping a friend, Zoe, run away. Zoe is the daughter of a crime lord. She falls in love with some guy and then overhears him calling her frigid and saying he’s going to go ahead and kill her to try and get at her father. So Rusty creates a new identity for Zoe and secrets her away to the Kelly compound.
Zoe meets Joe (Nathen’s twin) and falls in love with him on day two (the whole story only last four days). Joe feels the same about her. The main conflict in this whole story is her feelings of not being “worthy” of him. She was raised by a bad person so she’s just not good enough to be with a man as wonderful as Joe Kelly. He could never ever want her. Wash, rinse, repeat, ad nauseam.
SPOILERS
She’s found by her ex-lover, kidnapped, and beaten. The Kelly’s find her almost immediately and rescue her. She spends another week feeling unworthy. Joe has to force her to see him again. They declare love and HEA.
END SPOILERS
It really is that simple a story. The word count greatly increased because we get lots of information about a few of the other Kelly’s. We also get a large chunk of the Rusty and Sean story. Even the epilogue went on for so long I just wanted it to end already. And yet several plot points are never resolved. We never find out why her mother left. We never find out why the ex-lover wanted to kill her or came after her again. There is no further information about her father. There is a big giant shooting match with many dead bad guys but poof, no consequences. The entire plot amounted to a barely formed outline.
I don’t know what’s happened but I’d sure like the old Maya Banks back.
