Rec - 4 1/2 Stars - I received this book as a free gift from the author. No expectation for a review was expressed by the author but I enjoyed it so much I wanted to leave a review.
Vengeance Aside
This is a mafia romance with no cheating, no ow drama and no non-consent/forced seduction. In fact, there are no triggers that I can think of and it has a hea.
The H falls hard for the h. He takes one look at the h and knows she's "it" for him. He wants to marry her and make babies with her. The h, on the other hand, just wants to sleep with the H with no strings. She doesn't believe in hea's. I really liked that she didn't fall instantly in love with the H as it tends to lessen a story and make it feel less believable to me. I'm good with a H falling instanly in love though, lol and I love it when he has to work to convince the h. (Especially if he has to chase her. That's catnip to me.) This H did have to work to convince the h and I loved it.
“Why are you so sure things will go your way when I’ve already told you I won’t have a relationship with you? Which means there won’t be any boys or girls to tell our story to,” she forced herself to add even though it…hurt?
.............. A few sentences later............
Oblivious to her inner struggle, Lukas made a shrugging motion that wasn’t really a shrug. “Because fighting it is futile. Our future together was decided the moment I saw you.”
See? her heart whispered, scaring the shit out of her. “Decided by whom?”
“The powers that be. God. The fates. You may choose whichever one suits you.”
Several pages later.....
“I think it would be best if you just took me home.”
He slowly shook his head.
“If I have sex with you first, will you take me home after?”
He couldn’t stop his grin at that hopeful tone. “Once we have sex, you’ll be home.”
Oh yeah! There was some good stuff here!
Some minor things to note -
The writing was great though there were a few editing issues - things like piece instead of peace. It wasn't prevalent throughout the book and didn't interfere with my enjoyment of the book. The sex was delayed and didn't happen until the 74% mark though there was an intimate foreplay scene prior to that.
Also, I liked the first half of the book more than the second half due to the h giving in to the H too soon imo. I wanted them to have sex and have the h try to get away, deny they were in a relationship or something along those lines. There was some great potential for some hot j/p scenes with that type of scenerio that didn't occur. Don't get me wrong, the H is very possessive and wants to kill the man she had lived with prior to meeting him. It's just that being a j/p aficionado, I can never get enough of that, lol.
The first half of the book was 5 stars, the second half 4 stars due to the h giving in to the H too soon in regards to marriage, love and babies. Also, there felt like there was a lot of dialogue where they were discussing their relationship with the H trying to convince the h he wanted forever with her. I wanted things to move forward, to get to the sex and for more time to elapse between their first meeting and the h acceding to their marriage. One week from meeting someone until marriage felt too quick to me.
Other than that, I really enjoyed this one and will be reading more from this author. I was very impressed and happy I read this.
