Guild Hunters Books 1-3 – by Nalini Singh
Rating 4.5 / 5.0
Heat 8 / 10 (explicit but few until book 3)
Genre Paranormal (angels and vampires)
The first three books in this series are all about the same couple. The mortal guild hunter Elena and the immortal archangel Raphael. At the end of book 1 there is a HFN ending. Book 2 continues their story and book 3 ends with them having found a good balance that you believe will last.
Their story continues in some of the remaining books in the series, but those are more about challenges from outside rather than within their relationship.
In book one - Angel's Blood, Raphael hires Elena to help him track an immensely dangerous and crazy rogue. She is “hunter born” meaning born with the ability to detect and track vampires by smell. Through their mutual efforts to track the rogue, they gradually give in to the desire they have for each other. There is only one partial and one complete intimate scene in this book. This book ends with them together but in a very fragile relationship.
WARNING SPOILERS
I cannot review the next two books, without giving away the ending of the first book. So if you don’t want to know, stop reading. Of course, all you have to do is look at the cover image to know.
In book two - Archangel's Kiss, Elena and Rafael are at the angel refuge. Elena has to build her strength and learn to fly. She is now an immortal angel, but a very weak one. Some of the other archangels would love to kill her. And some of them make a few attempts. This is also a time of building for their relationship. There is such a power imbalance between them and they need to work through that. In particular, one archangel wants Elena dead.
In book three - Archangel's Consort, an ancient one is rising. Raphael and Elena are back in New York but the world is threatened by this ancient one’s awakening. Raphael and Elena will never be equal but trust between them has greatly improved. Raphael is still over protective and Elena struggles to prove to him that he must trust her to fail and survive, or their relationship will never work.
I love how the author portrays these characters. It is no easy thing to describe such an immensely powerful being in a way that makes him a sympathetic H. There is a constant thread of the h making him a little bit mortal. Consequently, although they would die to protect her, Raphael’s seven (basically his most trusted lieutenants) are not happy with her presence. Elena has to be so mentally strong in order to stand up to everyone. The way the trust develops between them is wonderfully done. I highly recommend this series and its take on angels and vampires.
