The Club – by Sharon Page
Rating 4.5 / 5.0
Heat 9/10 (some kink, see description below)
Genre – Regency
The h, a widow, is searching for a friend of hers that has gone missing. Her search takes her to a sex club where she encounters her friend’s brother, who is also searching for his sister. Several early scenes take place in this club. Many things are described such as multiple partners, BDSM, F/F, etc. These are things the MCs see, not participate in.
The h was abused by her husband. She flinches any time a man raises his hand or his voice. The parts of the story where the H recognizes her problems and helps her work through them are some of my favorite bits. He’s so gentle and patient with her. We get to see real growth and recovery in the h.
The H has been nicknamed Lord Wicked, and he was. But not as much as everyone thinks, and not anymore. The h judges him on what he says and does now, not on what happened in the past or what other people say about him. The H is greatly affected by her faith in his essential goodness.
The plot takes a lot of twists and turns and there are villains lurking around every corner. The romance between these two takes place fairly quickly, but they are not strangers to each other. He is the brother of her dearest friend.
The story lost ½ a star for me for two reasons. Most important was the fact that the morality of the time was ignored in some places and yet it was a large part of the story in others. The H had rescued four young women (15-19 yrs old) from harems and seraglios in the east and brought them home to England. But he has them living in his house unchaperoned. The h comes to stay with him while she’s in danger, again, unchaperoned. That makes her his mistress in the eyes of society. So much for protecting her.
The second point is purely personal preference.

There is one place on a person’s body that I don’t ever want to read about having a tongue touch, much less enter. No thank you.
For me, that isn’t sexy or romantic. Thankfully, it only happened the once and it was very brief.
