ETA - When I started this thread yesterday I should have mentioned that if I start a book knowing full well that it's a cliffy that's my choice. If I pay good money for a book, and some aren't cheap, get invested in the story, only to find out that it happens to be a cliffy I tend to become very cranky. Who knows how long it will take for the next book to come out?? I don't want to wait 6 months or even a year to find out the end of the story. I'd rather be told up front the book is a cliffy and be allowed to decided if I want to invest my time and money!

I’m soooo disappointed and haven’t even read the story. 😔 she is so much better than this and the reviews have told me more than enough. I’m sorry you went through it
I don't like cliffhangers either. Someone once gave me a book and I didn't realize it was a cliffie till I was in a foreign country and couldn't get the next book. When I got home I immediately bought the next one but didn't realize that was a cliffie as well. Luckily the finale of the trilogy was released about a week after I got home so I was finally able to finish it. On the author's website, it does mention that they are tightly connected but not cliffies. I guess the reader is supposed to assume that's what she meant. Anyway, I've mentioned these books before but for those of you who don't know they were Kissing Midnight and Breaking Midnight by Emma Holly. And for those who are interested in reading all the books, the final book is Saving Midnight. You would think I learned my lesson with this author but she did it again. However, this time the release dates were four months apart. If I had known that, I would have waited and bought them together. The cliffie book is Devil at Midnight and it's conclusion is Angel at Dawn. The H is these two books made an appearance in Breaking Midnight.
This next author hasn't actually finished her series. I believe its because the publisher didn't want her to continue on with it. I believe she's trying to buy back the rights so she can finish them. So until then... The books are Kiss of the Rose, Blood of the Rose and Mark of the Rose by Kate Pearce. Technically you can only read Kiss of the Rose and Blood of the Rose without Marlk of the Rose. But there's an important secondary character in the first two books. He's the H in the 3rd. I really enjoyed the series and hope she can continue them.
I refuse, for the most part, to read cliffhangers. The only one I've read is because I love the author (she's also the only romance author whose first-person books I sometimes buy), and when I borrowed it from someone, all 6 volumes were available at once. If I see in a blurb or review that something is a cliffhanger, I won't buy it, even if it's free. If I accidentally do get a cliffhanger (usually a free book), I immediately delete it and never buy another book from that author.

I'm the same way. I HATE getting invested in a story only to find out its a cliffhanger! If the author sneaks that in she/he is usually done for me as far as I'm concerned.
Can't say I'll never read an author who writes Cliffhangers, but I try my best to wait til all the books are out and can be read back-to-back.
I think Iris Johansen could maybe be named The Queen of Cliffhangers. These are books in the midst of her long-running Eve Duncan series, that I've observed. Probably missing others.
Resolution Trilogy by Iris Johansen 1. Eve (4/11) - Cliffhanger 2. Quinn (7/11) - Cliffhanger 3. Bonnie (10/11)
Woo-Woo Malarkey Trilogy 1. Taking Eve (4/13) - Cliffhanger 2. Hunting Eve (7/13) - Cliffhanger 3. Silencing Eve (10/13)
Eve Duncan & Friends 20. Hide Away (5/16) - Cliffhanger
Kendra Michaels by Iris Johansen & Roy Johansen 6. Double Blind (7/18)
Believe it or not there are a few mail order brides authors who write cliffhangers.
I always check the key highlighted words/phrases Amazon lists from the reviews, if any and skim the reviews. Some reviewers are kind enough to say cliffhanger. Also if the title says "Bk 1" I check the author page for a Bk 2 and if available peruse the excerpt for same character names.
If you're not retired like me I'm sure taking valuable time to do this checking for cliffs is a pain in the neck, so to speak. I find it very disappointing if the 1st sounds great and especially free and then I check further and find out it's a cliffhanger.
Here comes the sun even though I love that rainy day feeling!
I always appreciate when reading the blurb about the book and the author states "Not a cliffhanger". Makes it much easier for me!
So true! Ridiculous that authors feel like they have to tell us its a complete story. I very very occasionally will buy a cliffy if its free. I mark it as such and dont read it unless the other parts come out free.
I'm STILL bitter about the book I read last summer that was 600+ pages long and ended in a cliffy. I mean seriously what else was left to say? I take length of book into account when I start it. I dont want to be stuck reading a book for a week but I dont always have hours upon hours to finish a long book.
Here are a couple more, it's a contemporary mystery trilogy.
The Guardian Trilogy by Karen Robards 1. The Ultimatum (6/17) - Cliffhanger 2. The Moscow Deception (6/18) - Cliffhanger 3. The Fifth Doctrine (3/19)
--Janie
Karen Robards let the readers know (on Facebook anyway) that it was a trilogy with the first book. I have bought the two released; since I knew I wouldn't be reading them right away I also waited until the price dropped before buying them.
I started the delay process with the last few Nora Robert's trilogy; that way I don't feel too bad when I pay full price for her standalone books (which are very pricey).
Be careful what you wish for, it might just come true.

Janice, you're probably the one who mentioned these were Cliffhangers in the first place. I'm not on Facebook but try and be alert when I come across something in a review or book forum, I take notes and tag titles on my FictionDB.com account.
i do the same on the lag-time reading usually. Bought these first two audible books before Audiobookstand closed their doors this summer. Hopefully, by time the last book comes out I'll be ready for it and can slide right in to the finish with all details fresh in mind.
