heroine was chosen to be princes concubine or mistress - he is getting married to someone else - she ends up being mistreated and gets away but is brought back and eventually I don't think he marries the other person - in the beginning she is given some potion to make her more amiable to having relations with him or something like that.

a couple settings I remember - I believe she is allowed to be mistreated by the princes fiancé and she gets away or something like that and is in a convent before prince gets her back

this society has a custom where the rulers have this concubine and there is another more experienced one that talks to her and tries to make her understand the process and deal with the prince's engagement to someone else.

I went back and read Secret Fire again and all of the description applies to that book except it doesn’t have the experienced concubine teaching her. If that is a separate book I hope someone finds it, I would like to read it.
