Heroine defended a bad guy in a case. Boyfriend and other police buddies didn’t like it. She was shot, harassed, etc. Several years later she requires police protection for some reason. She is sent to stay with the old boyfriend who is now a sheriff in another town. He doesn’t want to help and is snarky, but does take her in.

I think the book you're looking for is "The Sheriff's Surrender" by Marilyn Pappano.

CS the H was awful! I think the h forgave him too quickly. He needed to do some major groveling. Plus, I think there are many who could never forgive him. It is a good book to read.
